Classical floral design in Persian carpet tradition is built around the principle of balance rather than symmetry. A central axis, a measured repeat, a border that frames without crowding. Centuries of weaving across the wider Persian sphere refined this grammar into the floral idiom that workshops across northern India still draw on today. The Classic Floral takes that lineage seriously, presenting it at drawing room scale with the slow palette that vegetable dye allows.

Three weavers worked the upright loom in northern India for roughly six months. Cotton warp and weft hold the structure, hand-spun wool fills the pile, the Persian asymmetric knot is tied row by row at a steady cadence. The dye programme draws on madder root for the warm reds, indigo for the deeper blues, walnut hull for the browns, and oak gall to push the deeper accents toward charcoal. Each colour was matured in copper for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A beige ground holds a continuous floral repeat in soft red, indigo, and walnut. The drawing is generous, with each blossom large enough to read as form rather than ornament. The border layers a wider rosette band between two narrower guards, framing the field as a window frames a view. Plant dye gives the field abrash, the quiet tonal variation between dye lots that marks a hand woven carpet from a printed one. The colours soften on their own schedule over the years.

What you are buying

A classical floral carpet of this density at 9' x 12' scale, when sold through a Western dealer or at international auction, ranges between four and ten lakh equivalent. This piece carries the same lineage, fibre, and density at workshop pricing rather than collector pricing. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few household objects share that property at any budget.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical scale for a drawing room arranged around a sectional sofa, or a dining setting seating ten to twelve as the work the room is built around. The beige and indigo palette suits chalk and putty walls, accepts brass and bronze, and reads well against walnut, teak, and oak joinery. Avoid strongly patterned upholstery; the field expects to be the graphic centre of the composition.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so window light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from outside the stain inward. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
