By the late nineteenth century the workshops of central Iran were producing the carpets that defined the formal interiors of London, New York, and Boston. A Swiss firm called Ziegler and Co. had set up a buying office and was commissioning weavers to soften the dense floral repeats of classical Persia into the open, airy fields the new western collectors preferred. The Sultanabad pattern that emerged from those commissions is one of the most influential designs in carpet history, and the floral piece in front of you is a direct descendant of that lineage.

Three to four weavers shared the loom for roughly seven months on this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) field. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed with botanical preparations of madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull. Each colour was matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered. The foundation is cotton, warped on a vertical beam, and the knotting was done by hand against the warp using the Persian asymmetric tie.

The composition

An open beige ground carries scrolling vine work and large palmettes in faded indigo, soft rust, and old gold. The borders are restrained, a single deep guard band rather than the layered frames that turn lesser Sultanabads busy. Vegetable dyes do not stay still. Across the next decade the rust will lighten, the indigos will deepen, and the beige will warm into bone. A vegetable-dyed Sultanabad does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to begin its working life.

What you are buying

Antique Sultanabads of comparable scale, condition, and palette sell through the major Western auction houses at attribution prices in the range of thirty to sixty thousand US dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, to comparable density. Hand-knotted wool with vegetable dye on a cotton foundation appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other floor object with that property.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the canonical formal scale. The piece expects a generous sofa configuration or a long dining table on the field rather than as flooring beneath separate furniture. Mid-tone or cream walls hold the saturation. The carpet pairs with walnut, brass, oil paintings, and either restrained period furniture or considered modern work.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the piece evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
