Serapi is the name western dealers gave to a class of carpet woven in north-western Persia from around 1870 to 1910, distinguished by an open, geometric drawing of the medallion and corner spandrels, large unworked passages of madder ground, and a colour palette restricted to the half-dozen pigments a village dyer could maintain. The Serapi field is more drawn than painted. It is a carpet that respects negative space.
Three weavers shared the loom over roughly seven months. Knots were tied row by row in the asymmetric Persian draw against a vertical beam, paced to the cartoon mounted above. The pile is wool, hand-spun from highland fleece, washed before dyeing so the natural lanolin retained the bath. Reds came from madder root cooked over multiple days, blues from fermented indigo, the secondary tones from oak gall, walnut hull, and pomegranate skin. Cotton warp and weft, beaten tight at the close of each line.
The composition
A central medallion drawn in soft red and ivory, set against a field of saturated madder. Corner spandrels in ivory mirror the medallion. The pattern reads cleanly at distance because the drawing is loose enough to breathe. The red will lighten over years of daylight to the warm brick the antique Serapis are loved for. The vegetable dye produces abrash, a soft horizontal banding where consecutive dye lots vary, that turns every passage into something nearer painting than printed pattern.
What you are buying
Antique nineteenth-century Serapis at 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) regularly sell at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell between thirty and seventy thousand dollars when they surface in good condition. This rug is a current weaving in the same tradition on the same loom geometry, made for use rather than for the vault. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciates. Antique price simply marks where this object travels over decades.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) holds a primary drawing room or a dining table seating eight to ten with chairs fully out. The red field anchors a room with warm timber, brass detail, and substantial upholstery in oatmeal, ochre, or oxblood. A Serapi resists fashion. It looks correct in a 1920s Bombay flat, a Lutyens bungalow, and a contemporary apartment with concrete floors and steel-framed glass.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so wear distributes evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, never the beater bar. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth working from outside in. Schedule a hand wash every five to seven years with a wool conservator who understands plant dyes and natural foundations. Properly maintained, this rug runs eighty years and crosses generations.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
