Rugsville Classic Agra Beige Gold Wool Carpet 8' x 8'

A round carpet is woven on the same vertical loom as a rectangular one. The weaver shapes the circle by adjusting the knot count at the top and bottom of each row, slowly tapering the field outward to its widest point and then back inward to the closing edge. The labour is higher than a square of equivalent area because every row above and below the equator carries a different count, and the design has to be charted for each of those counts in turn.

Three weavers spent around six months at this 8' round (244 x 244 cm) Classic Agra. The pile is full-worsted New Zealand wool. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical beam, with the pattern transferred from a hand-painted cartoon mounted overhead. The cotton foundation was double-warped, with extra warp threads inserted at the field's widest point to hold the tension. The pile was sheared to a uniform medium height across the curve.

The composition

A beige ground with gold floral work radiating from a centred medallion. The radial symmetry of the design suits the round format better than a rectangular pattern would. The beige carries the warm undertone of full-worsted wool, and the gold passages catch overhead light at any angle because there is no fixed long axis to orient against. The medallion holds the eye at the centre and lets the pattern resolve outward.

Hand-knotted round Agras at eight-foot diameter cross ₹3 lac in international dealer inventory because the loom time is significantly higher than a comparable rectangular weave. This is a new weaving in the Agra tradition, in full-worsted New Zealand wool, on a double-warped cotton foundation, by named weavers in India. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' round (244 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a round dining table seating six to eight, for a centred conversation area with curved seating, or for a foyer beneath a chandelier where the rug echoes the ceiling fixture. The beige-and-gold palette holds against cream walls and gains depth against warmer paint. Pairs with brass, walnut, and natural-stone surfaces.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn every three months because no part of the field has a long edge to protect from directional wear. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Address spills by blotting toward the centre to avoid wicking dye outward along the curve. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years.
