Rugsville Chevron Handmade Green Wool Jute Dhurrie Carpet 4' x 6'

The chevron is one of the oldest pattern instincts in textile work, older than the loom itself. A diagonal stroke, mirrored against its own reflection, repeated up the length of the cloth. The reason the form survives across cultures from Anatolian flatweaves to Navajo blankets to Bauhaus rugs is that it does the one thing geometry can do that figuration cannot: it organises a field without claiming a focal point. The eye moves up and across rather than landing in one spot.

This dhurrie was hand-woven in India over about three weeks on a horizontal pit loom. Wool wefts were beaten down across a cotton warp, with jute introduced in alternating bands to give the weave its open, slightly nubbed surface. There are no knots. The pattern lives in the colour change of the weft as the weaver counts off each pass. A flatweave at this scale is the hardest discipline in the dhurrie tradition because every thread shows. There is no pile to forgive a miscount.

The composition

Forest green and undyed cream chevron stripes, with the jute lending the cream bands a warmer straw cast where it appears. The wool stripes carry the saturated green; the jute stripes break it with a flatter natural tone. The two fibres age differently. The wool will soften and gain a slight halo with foot traffic. The jute will lighten by a half tone in the first year and then hold.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) sits well at the foot of a queen bed, under a small reading chair and ottoman, or as the working layer of a child's room where a heavier wool pile would feel too formal. The flat surface takes a coffee table cleanly without scarring the pile. The diagonal works against a square room, breaking the orthogonal lines of the walls and floor.

Care

Shake out monthly. Vacuum on a low setting with no beater bar. Blot any spill with clean cotton and a small amount of mild detergent. Flatweaves are reversible. Flip the piece every six months to even the wear. Spot wash only. A rug pad underneath stops the dhurrie sliding on hard floors and adds a little softness underfoot.
