A tufted carpet earns its weight from density rather than knot count. Loops pulled tight against a cotton scrim, sheared flat by hand with long shears, washed and finished by a separate hand. The result reads close to a knotted rug at a more democratic price and accepts the design vocabulary of contemporary studios cleanly.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 8 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the natural field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.

The composition

A composition built around an undyed natural field that lets the fibre speak for itself. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. Light moves across the field through the day; the morning sun pulls warmth out of the wool and the evening lamp reads it as a deeper register of the same hue.

The piece in a room

At 8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) the rug carries a working living room, a king bedroom, or a six-seat dining table. The natural field reads as a considered ground for upholstery and timber, not as the thing the room is about. Lighter walls push the colour forward as a focal field; deeper walls let it settle into the architecture as a quieter register. All four legs of a sectional can sit on top with breathing space around the perimeter, which is the canonical living-room placement at this scale. Settles into rooms that already trust their architecture and uses the field to soften rather than to declare.

Care

Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Expect light shedding for the first six to eight weeks as loose fibre works free of the pile. Blot spills, never rub. Professional dry clean every two to three years. A tufted rug treated this way holds its weight and finish for ten to fifteen years.
