Vegetable dyeing as a discipline almost died out in the late nineteenth century when synthetic chrome dyes flooded the global wool market. It was preserved by a small group of revivalist workshops who kept building their colour from madder root, indigo, oak gall, walnut hull, and pomegranate rind. The reason the discipline survived is simple. Plant-derived colour matures in the wool over decades, deepening rather than fading, and a synthetic equivalent cannot reproduce that property.
Three weavers worked together on this 8' x 10' for roughly five months. Hand-spun wool was washed twice in soft water, conditioned in lanolin emulsion, then lowered into copper vats where each colour had been matured for two to three weeks. The Persian asymmetric knot is tied against a cotton foundation. The light-blue ground required four successive dippings in indigo to set the saturation against the beige border without staining the cream highlights along the floral work.
The composition
A soft beige field carries a central medallion in faded light blue, framed by spandrels of cream and walnut floral work. The light blue is not stable, and that is the point. Over a decade the indigo will lift into a more silvered tone where the rug catches sun, and deepen into a near-cobalt where it sits under furniture. The beige will warm into oat. A vegetable-dyed rug does not arrive complete; it arrives ready to start its life of slow transformation.
What you are buying
Vegetable-dyed hand-knotted wool carpets in this scale clear the $4,500 to $8,000 mark at design galleries in London and New York. The construction is the same here. What the buyer is purchasing is months of weaver labour, plant-dyed wool that holds and slowly intensifies its colour, and a piece that increases in value as it ages. A printed or chemically dyed equivalent depreciates from the day of unboxing.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is full living-room scale. The beige ground keeps the rug quiet inside a contemporary interior; the light-blue medallion gives it enough character to anchor a seating group without taking the room over. Pair with oak or walnut floors, linen and oatmeal wool upholstery, walls in chalk or warm grey, and brass fixtures. The rug welcomes direct sunlight; the indigo will deepen rather than wash out.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn for even ageing. Vacuum once a week with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside of the spill toward the centre. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. The plant-dye chemistry requires no surfactant beyond mild wool soap.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
