Flatweaving belongs to a tradition that stretches from Anatolia across the Caucasus and into the Indian subcontinent. The technique uses no pile; the pattern is the weft. The finished piece is light, reversible, and reads as a graphic field on the floor. A well-made flatweave outlasts most pile carpets simply because there is no pile to wear.

Built in India over three weeks. Two weavers sat at a floor loom, working wool weft across a cotton warp, beating down each pass with a comb so the field stays dense and the colour reads cleanly from one side to the other. The structure is honest: nothing is hidden behind a pile, the drawing is the rug.

The composition

Beige carries the field. The pattern is carried in the weft itself, which means the rug is reversible and the colour reads as honest structure rather than as surface treatment. The geometry softens with use rather than blurring, and the surface acquires a low sheen as foot traffic burnishes the wool.

On the weaving

A note on the loom: the weaver works at a horizontal floor loom set up in the courtyard or veranda of a working home. The cotton warp is tensioned tight, the weft is beaten down hard with a wooden comb after every colour pass, and the rug grows row by row at the steady pace of a careful hand. There is no power assistance at any stage of the work.

The piece in a room

At 5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) the rug anchors a primary bedroom or a medium living area. Warm chalk, oat, or the deeper terracotta walls a neutral rug needs let the beige field settle as a considered ground. The drawing reads from a standing viewer, then resolves at chair-side. Furniture sits on the rug rather than around it; this is a piece that wants the conversation organised over its surface.

Care

Suction vacuuming once a week. Reverse the rug occasionally to even out light and footfall. Spills should be blotted, not rubbed; a flatweave is essentially a flat textile, and rubbing pushes liquid through the structure. A professional clean every couple of years is usually sufficient. The piece is light to lift and easy to relocate when the room rearranges around it.
