Built in India over three weeks. A single weaver sat at a floor loom, working wool weft across a cotton warp, beating down each pass with a comb so the field stays dense and the colour reads cleanly from one side to the other. The structure is honest: nothing is hidden behind a pile, the drawing is the rug.

The composition

Multicoloured as the dominant tone, with the secondary colours brought in as the weft changes. The flatweave structure means the pattern goes through the rug; the back reads almost as the face does. The piece is light to lift and easy to layer, and the geometry pairs comfortably with both period and contemporary furniture.

On the weaving

A note on value: a flatweave at this scale represents weeks of focused loom time at a price per square foot that falls well below the equivalent knotted carpet. The construction is honest, the materials are visible, and the piece has none of the conservation overhead that a pile rug carries. It is the entry point to collecting hand-finished wool work.

The piece in a room

A 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) format works as a corridor, a study, or under a side table. The multicoloured field gives the room an axis. Walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather sit comfortably on it; the geometry pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the only graphic element holding the floor.

Care

Suction vacuuming once a week. Reverse the rug occasionally to even out light and footfall. Spills should be blotted, not rubbed; a flatweave is essentially a flat textile, and rubbing pushes liquid through the structure. A professional clean every couple of years is usually sufficient. The piece is light to lift and easy to relocate when the room rearranges around it.
