Rugsville Carley Geometric Brown Modern Carpet 5'3" x 7'9"

The design lineage here runs through the mid-century Scandinavian carpets of Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom and the abstract weavings that came out of the Ulm Hochschule, refracted through a contemporary Turkish design studio.

The composition runs through a brown register, with secondary tones picked up in the field geometry. The drawing breaks symmetry deliberately at the centre so the eye reads the rug as a single composed surface rather than a tile repeat. The colour is engineered for stability under direct light, which is the trade-off the format makes against the slow patina of wool. The studio worked the design across several rounds of paper revision before approving it for production, with the spacing of the geometry tuned to room scale rather than to a flat sample swatch.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene. The colour is locked at the fibre level by temperature rather than dipped at the surface, which is why direct sunlight does not wash the saturation out the way it bleaches pigment-printed yarns. The fibre resists staining at the molecular level: spilled wine, juice, oil and coffee lift with a damp cloth before they set. The pile stays flat under furniture and does not shed.

The composition

The rug sits as the considered ground of a room rather than the focal motif. Pairs well with walnut, oak, brass, leather, and linen. Pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery; the brown field expects to be the only graphic in the composition. The fibre takes light differently from wool: flatter, less glossy, with a more uniform reading across the field, which is part of what makes the engineered yarn well suited to busy rooms.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm). The format is the working scale of the Indian flat: a sofa-and-coffee-table arrangement, a bedroom under a queen, or a dining nook. The brown reading carries cleanly under both warm tungsten and cool LED. Pet hair and crumbs lift easily under a routine vacuum.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar engaged or disengaged, the fibre tolerates either. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cotton cloth. Machine wash on a cold cycle if a spill does not lift; the size folds to fit a domestic drum. Dries flat in two hours. No professional cleaning required, no rotating-brush damage to worry about, no shedding into the room air.
