Green grounds in transitional carpet drawing came into the Western dealer trade through the twentieth century as a softer alternative to the saturated reds and deep blues of the older Persian palette. The colour reads as a calmer ground for the same kind of floral and tendril vocabulary, and the better workshops in India have continued to refine it. Three weavers worked the loom for roughly six months. Hand-spun, yarn-dyed wool was tied with the Persian asymmetric knot and packed row by row against a vertical warp. The green ground was prepared from a single dye lot to keep the tonal weight unified across the field. The luster wash at the finishing stage gives the surface a slight sheen and a mellow patina, the silky feel typical of the better Indian transitional work. The pile was sheared to eleven millimetres in two finishing passes.

The composition

A green ground supports a transitional drawing in muted accent tones. The composition is treated as a refined repeat rather than as a strict medallion, which keeps the field reading as a calm surface from a distance and as drawing in close. Over the first decade the green softens slightly toward sage and the accent tones deepen against it, the colour relationship sharpening rather than fading.

Rotate the carpet every six months so traffic and daylight age the surface evenly. Weekly vacuum with the beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton from outside in. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years preserves the dye and the foundation for a long working life.
