Jute is the oldest workable bast fibre on the subcontinent, spun and woven on the Bengal floodplains for thousands of years before it was named on the global commodity exchanges in the nineteenth century.
Flatbed loom work over 2 weeks by two weavers. The dhurrie carries the design as colour blocks set into the weft, no pile to crush, no knot to slip; the surface is the structure of the cloth. The jute / sisal was selected for staple length and tensile strength suited to flat-weave construction, where every weft pass takes the full mechanical load of the design. Lower grades of fibre will pull and slacken over time; the grade used here holds the geometry through decades of household use without the warp showing through the design.
The composition
A field in natural, the figure work in tonal contrast. The flat-weave construction means the rug sits low against the floor rather than rising into a soft pile, which is why the form has lived for two thousand years in domestic use across the Asian belt. The flat construction means the rug takes a few weeks to settle into the floor it lives on. The first month of use will produce a slight relaxation in the structure as the weave finds its working tension, after which the dimensions stabilise and the rug holds shape for years.
The piece in a room
4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) is sized for an entry hallway, an open dining footprint, a sun room, or a verandah with covered seating. The natural carries the rough, structural quality the form has had since the Bengal floodplains began producing the fibre commercially.
Care
Light vacuuming once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Spot clean with cool water; do not introduce strong detergents that contain optical brighteners. The piece is reversible and benefits from being turned over each season. A specialist clean every two to three years extends the working life by decades, and a thin underlay protects both the rug and the floor beneath it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
