This rug was hand-tufted in India over 5 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the beige field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.

The composition

Botanical drawing over a beige field that shifts between sand and bone depending on the daylight. Stems and blossoms drawn loosely enough to read as natural rather than as catalogue. The repeat is large enough to carry a long room without forcing the eye to count. The geometry holds at distance and rewards close looking, which is the test a long-lived design has to pass to stay in production for more than a season.

The piece in a room

At 5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) the rug suits a compact living area, a primary bedroom with a queen frame, or a dining nook seating four. The beige ground holds the floor without claiming ownership of the room, and the geometry resolves cleanly when sofa legs and side tables sit on top of it. Front legs of upholstery on the rug, rear legs off, is the arrangement that lets the field read at full strength. Care

Weekly suction vacuuming. The shedding settles within two months. Spot clean with a clean damp cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. Have the rug dry cleaned by a textile cleaner every couple of years to lift fine dust from the base of the pile.
