Indian dhurrie weaving has been a household form for several hundred years, working on horizontal pit looms in cotton, wool, and jute. The flatweave is the working textile of the subcontinent, equally at home in palace and farmhouse. The flatweave is the most versatile rug form in the household. Light enough to move, durable enough to take traffic, and visually disciplined enough to suit contemporary architecture without needing the depth of pile. The trade-off is the absence of softness underfoot, which is the deliberate aesthetic of the form.
Hand-woven in India over 3 weeks on a horizontal flatweave loom. The structure is weft-faced, which means the neutral pattern is built up row by row from coloured weft passing over and under a hidden warp. There is no pile and no knotting. The drawing belongs entirely to the weave.
The composition
A flat-woven neutral field. The geometry of the pattern is held by the structure of the weave itself, which is why flatweaves sit cleanly under furniture and read as graphic surfaces rather than as decorative pile. The flat profile means both faces are usable, although the front carries the cleaner finish. Slit-weave joins separate adjacent colour blocks, leaving a small open seam where two fields meet. That detail is the signature of the flatweave tradition and the reason the structure is so durable. The seams settle and tighten with use.
The piece in a room
2'6" × 10' (76 × 305 cm) works under a corridor, a long entry hall, or alongside a kitchen island. The flat profile slides under low furniture without bunching. Holds against painted plaster, lime-washed brick, or limewashed wood joinery without competing with them. The rug rolls compactly for storage, which makes seasonal swaps easy. Pair with a heavier piece in winter and lift the flatweave for the cooler months. Architectural rooms in stone, lime plaster, or whitewashed brick suit the structure.
Care
Weekly vacuuming on suction only, no beater bar. Blot any spill with cool water and a clean cloth. The rug can be rolled and shaken out of doors when needed. Professional cleaning every three to four years. The weft tightens with light use and the rug grows more comfortable over time.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
