Blue is the most demanding colour in carpet weaving. Indigo is fugitive in sunlight, expensive to fix, and unforgiving of any inconsistency in the dye bath, which is why blue-ground Persian and Indian carpets have always commanded a premium over their red and ivory siblings. The composition in this rug is built around a deep blue field with traditional motifs floating across the surface in muted ivory and rust, the way a constellation reads against a clear night sky.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly six months. Each row of asymmetric knots was tied by hand against the warp, then beaten flat with a steel comb. The wool is hand-carded, hand-spun highland fleece, chosen for its lanolin content and its ability to hold indigo to the saturation the design needs. The blue itself was developed across two dye baths rather than a single dip, the way an oil painter glazes a colour to give it depth, so the field reads as a layered pigment rather than a flat surface.

The composition

A saturated blue ground. Ivory and rust motifs scaled to read at room distance without crowding the field. The drawing is loose enough to feel hand-made, tight enough to hold its rhythm at any angle. As the rug ages the blue will warm slightly toward midnight, the ivory will move toward bone, and the rust will mellow into terracotta. The palette is engineered to mature, not to fade.

What you are buying

Antique blue-ground Indian carpets of this scale and condition routinely sell at auction in the 4 to 8 lac range. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same hand-spun wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object you put on the floor with that property at any price point in this range.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical living-room scale. The rug expects an L-shaped sectional or a long sofa with two flanking chairs sitting fully on the field. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation of the blue without dampening it. Off-white ceilings and warm wood floors push the indigo forward. Pair with brass lighting, leather, oiled walnut, and unbleached linen.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the indigo ages evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained hand wash every five years lifts embedded dust and restores the dye depth. Cared for this way, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlasts its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
