The Moroccan high-Atlas weavers worked an open ivory field with sparse charcoal lines because the rug had to do two jobs. Pile-down it warmed a stone floor in winter. Pile-up it served as a sleeping mat. Decoration sat in the way of both, so the weavers learned to say more by drawing less. That restraint is the inheritance behind this piece.
The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 2-3 weavers shared the loom across 3-4 months, working at roughly 80 knots per square inch. That gives a finished count of around 460 thousand hand-tied knots. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.
The composition
The field is built from undyed wool in two values. The line work sits sparsely across it. The whole arrangement reads as a drawing rather than a pattern, and the room arranges itself around that quiet graphic. The dominant tones run to ivory, black.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted carpets at this knot count and this fibre standard sit, internationally, at multiples of the asking price here. The Indian workshop ecosystem makes the lower figure possible without compromising the discipline. Used and looked after, the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the way every honest hand-knotted weaving does.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room with a sectional or two facing sofas above it. The composition is built to be read from the standing height of someone walking into the room. Sits well alongside leather, brass, ceramic, and the soft greys of poured concrete.
Conservation
Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug 180 degrees every six months to keep the wear even. Use a clean cotton cloth on spills and work from the perimeter inward. Engage a hand-wash conservator every five years for the deep clean a domestic process cannot reach. The piece holds its value across decades of household use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
