Rugsville Beni Ourain Moroccan Grey Wool Carpet 5' x 8'

The composition is built around the Moroccan diamond grid. Everything else in the rug works in service of it. The palette of grey sits inside that geometry without competing with it, the way a quiet ground holds a strong figure in a print.

The piece was hand-knotted in India over 3 months by 2 to 3 weavers. Wool pile, cotton foundation, hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches and lowered into vats one skein at a time. The finishing was done by hand with long shears so the relief between figure and ground reads clearly across the room.

The composition

The Moroccan diamond grid runs across a grey field. The single-tone composition lets the geometry do the work, and the wool's natural variation carries the eye. The hand-spun wool carries enough variation in the yarn that the surface reads as one colour at a distance and as a hundred close in. That depth grows with use, not against it.

A hand-knotted wool piece at this price is unusual in the trade and represents the workshop's direct-to-buyer position. Equivalent rugs in Western retail run at twice or three times this figure. The piece holds its character through years of use rather than wearing out.

The piece in a room

At 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) the rug centres a coffee table with a primary sofa above, or runs under a queen bed with the bedside tables on the field. The colour is calibrated to anchor the room without forcing a single decorative direction onto it. The piece works with oak floors, leather seating, and unbleached linen drapery. Avoid placing busy patterned fabric next to it; the rug carries the graphic line in the room.

Conservation

Rotate the piece twice a year so wear and light spread evenly across the field. Vacuum on suction only, with the brush bar lifted clear. Spills come up with a dry cotton cloth pressed in from the outside of the mark. A specialist hand-wash every five years restores the lustre that interior light steadily mutes. The rug is built to outlast the room it first lived in.
