Bamboo silk arrived in the carpet trade only in the last two decades, but the fibre has rewritten the economics of the loom. Drawn from cellulose pulp and spun to a denier finer than mulberry silk would tolerate at this scale, it gives a hand-knotted rug the same liquid sheen and the same directional shift in light, at a price the market will accept. The grey field in this piece reads almost monochrome from above and breaks into pewter, smoke, and fog as you walk past it.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for close to four months. The pile is one hundred percent bamboo silk worked over a cotton foundation, every knot tied by hand with the asymmetric loop the Tibetan tradition uses for soft fibres. The shearing was done dry, then wet, then dry again, so the surface picks up light in long parallel bands rather than the broken sparkle of poorly finished silk. The grey was achieved through a single immersion bath followed by a soda ash wash to set the tone.

The composition

One colour, modulated. The bamboo motif runs as a faint vertical striation across the field, almost a watermark, visible only at certain angles. There is no border, no medallion, no incident. The rug is built to function as a tonal ground for a room that has its own colour story already, and the silk does the work of catching whatever ambient light passes through. From the bedroom doorway it reads silver. From a low chair it reads slate.

The price here is set against clearance pricing on a piece that took four months of skilled hand labour. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Conservation

Silk is more delicate than wool and rewards careful handling. Vacuum gently with the suction-only setting and the beater bar locked off. Blot any spill at once with a clean white cloth and never rub. Hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. Rotate twice a year to keep the wear even.
