The Agra workshops developed their reputation under Mughal patronage, weaving carpets in a vocabulary that combined Persian curvilinear restraint with the heavier floral language of the subcontinent. The pattern in this carpet descends from that lineage, with an ivory ground carrying a measured red palmette repeat that reads as a single calm field rather than a busy floral. The colour pairing is deliberate: ivory to lift a room, red to anchor it.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for around six months. The pile is yarn-dyed wool, luster-washed after weaving so the surface picks up light the way an antique does. The foundation is cotton, the construction follows the Persian asymmetric knot, and the carpet was sheared close to the back so the floral repeat sits crisp against the ivory ground rather than blurring into the field.
The composition
Ivory in the body, with a red palmette network running from corner to corner and a coordinated red border that frames without crowding the field. The reds carry slight tonal variation across the surface, which is what yarn-dyed wool does and printed pattern cannot reproduce. The luster wash gives the wool a soft satin sheen that registers most clearly at oblique light angles. Over time the ivory will warm slightly toward bone and the red will settle a half tone darker.
What you are buying
Period Agra carpets of this scale appear at Sotheby's and Christie's in the fifteen to thirty thousand dollar range when they come to market. This is a freshly woven piece in the same tradition, with the same wool tier and the same wash. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the price reflects a clearance position rather than a comment on the construction itself.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical scale for a drawing room with a sectional sofa or for a dining room with a ten-seat table. The ivory ground brightens rooms with limited natural light, and the red palmettes settle against walnut, oak, and dark stone floors equally well. Mid-tone walls in clay, taupe, or olive let the colour relationship breathe.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so the field weathers evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, with the beater bar lifted. Spills should be blotted with a clean cotton cloth from the outer ring inward. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five years to keep the foundation supple. Maintained this way, the carpet will run eighty years and outlast its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
