The Arts and Crafts carpet traces to William Morris and his circle in late-Victorian England. Morris and his daughter May rejected the machine-loomed medallion carpets of the period for hand-knotted rugs in slow, plant-derived colour and stylised botanical pattern, drawn from the medieval English garden rather than from Persian sources.

Three weavers and a finisher worked the rug over three to four months. Wool was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, then the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was done by hand with long shears, cutting the pile down so the design reads in relief above the field. Hand-spun wool, washed after finishing to settle the colour and bring the surface to its sheared finish.

The composition

A a neutral palette field, anchored by the design but not crowded by it. The composition reads as one settled gesture rather than a tile that repeats. The colour will deepen by half a stop over the first year as the wool oxidises against ambient light, and another half stop across the next decade of use. There is no point at which the rug is finished; the surface continues to change in slow registration with the room. The slight unevenness of the surface is the working signature of the medium and is what keeps the piece from looking printed or industrial.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' is the canonical drawing-room rug. It expects a ten- or twelve-seat dining table or a full sectional sofa above it, not as flooring underneath the furniture but as the work the room is composed around. The scale carries colour at distance and the geometry resolves on approach. Direct sunlight is a friend rather than an enemy; UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.

Care

Suction-only vacuum weekly. Blot spills with a damp cotton cloth, working from edge to centre to avoid spreading the stain into the surrounding pile. Mild shedding in the first two months is the loose fibre clearing the pile and tapers off naturally. A professional dry clean every three years keeps the surface bright; avoid wet-cleaning at home as the latex bond will not tolerate prolonged saturation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
