The Antique Persian register is recognisable at a glance. Soft tonal floral, no hard contrast, abrash bands running through a field that reads as already lived with. That softness is not an accident of age. The original weavers built it deliberately by layering plant dye in three short baths rather than dipping the wool once, by leaving the wool in sun for several days before clipping, and by washing the finished rug in mineral solution to mellow the saturation by two stops. This rug was built the same way.

Three to four weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. Hand-spun New Zealand wool was laid on cotton warp and tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The dye baths were drawn from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, oak gall, and pomegranate rind, each one matured in copper vessels over two to three weeks. After clipping the rug saw four days of sun and a long mineral wash that pulled the colour into antique register.

The composition

A floral field worked in cream, soft madder, faded pomegranate, and walnut, with deeper indigo running as outline and shadow. The composition is all-over rather than centred. The border is a triple band held in tonal proximity to the field. The wool carries faint horizontal abrash where neighbouring dye lots sit side by side, the trace of small-batch plant-dye work. Over the first decade the colours will mature into one another into the slow chord that defines the lineage.

What you are buying

Antique Persian carpets in this register reach thirty-five to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction when condition matches. This rug is woven on the same vertical loom, in the same Persian knot, in long-staple wool, with the same plant-dye discipline. At a fraction of the auction comparable it appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property no other floor object holds at any price.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The soft palette grounds chalk walls and warms walnut casework. Pairs with brass, raw linen, oxblood leather, and a single large work above the sofa. The all-over field accepts asymmetric furniture placement.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with cotton. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool conservator at the six-year mark. With this care the piece runs nine decades and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
