About 2.7 million hand-tied knots. Roughly six months of work. Three to four weavers leaning into a vertical beam in turn, tying knots by feel without a paper cartoon to read from. That is the labour anchor for an antique-Persian-style 9 x 12 in this register. The price you pay buys the labour, the long-staple wool, the plant dye, and the slow finish that is the only way a carpet of this character is built.

The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool laid on cotton warp and tied in Persian asymmetric knots. Madder root, indigo, walnut hull, oak gall, and pomegranate rind were the dye plants, each matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. After the rug came off the loom it was clipped, sun-dried for four days, and given a long mineral wash that pulled the saturation back into the soft tonal register of late-nineteenth-century Persian floral work.

The composition

A continuous floral field in cream, faded madder, soft pomegranate, and a deep indigo outline. The composition has no central anchor. The eye moves freely across the rug and finds incident at every scale. The border is a triple band held in tonal proximity to the field so it frames without competing. Faint horizontal abrash bands run through the field as the trace of small-batch dye lots, the fingerprint of plant-dye work that no synthetic finish reproduces.

What you are buying

Antique Persian carpets at this scale, palette, and condition carry estimates of thirty-five to seventy-five thousand US dollars at the major rug auctions when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same loom, in the same fibre, to the same density. At one and a half lac it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) holds a ten-seat dining table or a deep sectional with the front legs of the seating landing on the wool. The soft palette welcomes chalk plaster, washed oak, brushed brass, and a single large work above the sofa. The rug calibrates to the architecture rather than dictating to it.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece runs ninety years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
