Antique Persian as a category covers four centuries of weaving from the Safavid court carpets to the late Qajar village pieces, but the carpets that reached Western collectors in volume were the soft-coloured floral fields from the second half of the nineteenth century. Those were the rugs that the Liberty showrooms sold under glass, and they are the rugs that taught Anglo-American interiors what a Persian carpet looked like. This piece is a contemporary weaving in that softer Persian register, with a continuous floral field rather than a centred medallion.
Four weavers worked the vertical loom for close to six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton foundation, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The dye lots were drawn from madder, indigo, walnut, oak gall, and pomegranate, each matured in copper for two to three weeks. After clipping, four days of sun and a long mineral wash mellowed the saturation toward an antique register that reads as already lived with.
The composition
A floral field with palmette, rosette, and vine drawn in the soft tonal range of late-nineteenth-century Persian work. The grounds shift between cream, pale madder, and pomegranate rose, with deeper indigo and walnut as outline. The colour is held in tonal proximity rather than in sharp contrast, the way a watercolour painter washes wet on wet. The border is a triple band held in the same restrained register so it frames without competing.
What you are buying
Antique Persian carpets at this scale and palette carry estimates of thirty-five to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same vertical loom, in the same fibre, to the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property no other floor object holds at any price.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room or dining room. The soft palette pairs with chalk walls, washed oak, brushed brass, raw linen, and unframed canvas. The rug calibrates to the architecture rather than competing with it.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with cotton, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool conservator every six to seven years. With this care the piece crosses a century.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
