A medallion at the right scale is the hardest single element to draw in a Persian carpet. Too large and it crowds the field. Too small and the corner spandrels lose their relationship to the centre. The antique Persian piece in front of you carries a medallion that holds the proportion correctly, anchored against an open vegetable-dyed ground that reads as architecture rather than as ornament. That balance is what kept the original village workshops in commission for two centuries.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. Around 1.7 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied row by row against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from a long-staple fleece washed before spinning so it lifts plant dye to the depth the antique palette requires. The dye baths were prepared from madder, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the skein was lowered.
The composition
A faded ivory ground holds a soft madder medallion at the centre and corner spandrels that echo it at a quieter scale. Vine work in fermented indigo and walnut runs through the field, with the irregular grace only plant dye produces. A single deep guard band closes the border. The colour is not finished. The ivory warms into bone over a decade, the madder mellows into terracotta, and the indigo deepens. The rug arrives ready to begin its life rather than at the end of someone else's.
What you are buying
Comparable antique Persian carpets in honest condition trade at international auction between twenty-five and fifty thousand dollars when they surface. This is a new weaving in the same village tradition, in the same fibre, in the same dye process at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property no other floor object carries at any price point.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area beneath the front feet of a sectional or sits under a six-to-eight seater dining table with an even reveal on every side. The faded ivory and madder palette works with walnut and oak floors, with leather and linen upholstery, and with the warmer metals.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with suction alone, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with a clean cotton cloth and cool water. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. Under that regime the piece runs ninety years on a domestic floor.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
