Antique Heriz weavings are valued for a particular kind of restraint. The medallion is large but never crowds the field, the corner pieces echo it without competing, and the border carries a single repeating motif rather than the layered guards of a city carpet. This piece is woven in the antique Heriz idiom, with the proportions and the muted colour register that distinguishes nineteenth-century village work from the brighter twentieth-century revivals. The intent is not to imitate age but to weave inside the same discipline.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for around seven months on this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) carpet. Wool was hand-spun and dyed in small batches before being tied knot by knot against a cotton warp. After the rug came off the loom it was washed and lightly sheared to bring the geometry forward and to soften the surface so the colour reads as settled rather than new.
The composition
A rust ground carrying a stepped indigo medallion, with ivory spandrels and a narrow border in deep blue. The rust is not a single value; it shifts gently from a brick tone in some passes to a softer terracotta in others, the natural consequence of vegetable-dyed wool. The indigo deepens at the medallion centre and lightens at its edges, where the dye took differently to the wool. The piece is engineered to look like it has lived in a room for two decades from the day it arrives.
What you are buying
Period antique Heriz carpets in this dimension, with intact pile and original sides, sell at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Rippon Boswell between $30,000 and $65,000 when they appear, which is rarely. The weaving in front of you sits in the same lineage, on the same loom type, in the same fibre, at a fraction of the auction comparable. A hand-knotted wool carpet of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other floor object with that property.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' is the canonical drawing-room scale. The rust and blue palette holds in rooms with cool plaster walls, dark joinery, and natural daylight. Pair with leather chairs, an oak or walnut dining table, brass lighting, and linen upholstery. The rug expects to be the organising element, not a layered accent.
Conservation
Rotate one half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Address oil and wine within the hour. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every six years. With this care the piece outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
