The Heriz tradition came out of a region in north-western Persia where the wool from the local sheep ran coarser and longer than southern fleece. That fibre dictated a coarser knot, a bolder geometry, and a colour pair built around madder rust and indigo blue, because those two dyes took to coarse wool the way no other plant pigment did. The result was a tribal carpet that could survive heavy traffic and still hold a graphic authority. This rug carries that lineage with a rust ground holding a blue medallion in geometric stylization.

Three to four weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. The pile is hand-spun lanolin-rich wool on a cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. Madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall were the dye plants. Each colour was matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. The clipped pile was sun-dried and given a long mineral wash to mellow the saturation toward the patina of an antique village weaving.

The composition

A rust field carrying a stepped blue medallion at the centre and four spandrel quarters at the corners. The geometry is tribal, drawn freehand by feel rather than from a paper cartoon, which is why the lines breathe rather than ruling. The border is a triple band, the principal one in indigo with a stylised rosette repeat, the two guards in cream and walnut. The blue and rust hold each other in the relationship that has carried Heriz weaving for two centuries.

What you are buying

Antique Heriz carpets at 9' x 12' with similar geometry and condition reach thirty to seventy thousand US dollars at international auction when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same fibre, on the same loom architecture, to the same density. At one and a half lac it sits at a fraction of the auction comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carries a ten-seat dining table or a deep sectional with all front legs of the seating on wool. The rust ground anchors chalk plaster and warms walnut casework. The medallion centres a room without dictating the furniture layout. Pairs with brass, leather, raw linen, and unframed canvas.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton at once, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug crosses a century in regular use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
