By the late nineteenth century the village workshops of north-western Persia were producing the Heriz carpets that filled European drawing rooms for two generations. The antique-style drawing carried in this rug, with its rust ground and floating blue medallion, is a direct descendant of those early village pieces. The colour pairing of oxidised madder and fermented indigo is one of the oldest in Persian weaving, and it survives because the two pigments age in opposite directions and lock the composition in balance.
The loom was shared in India by three weavers over roughly five months. Around 1.6 million symmetric knots were tied by feel, the wool drawn from highland fleece washed and combed to a long staple before spinning. The dye process used madder root for the rust, fermented indigo for the blue, walnut hull for the brown, and weak iron mordant to set the palette without darkening the wool.
The composition
A rust field anchors a soft blue medallion at the centre, with corner spandrels that echo the medallion in faded ivory. The vine drawing is angular rather than curvilinear, the village dialect rather than the court script. The rust will mellow over a decade into terracotta, the blue will deepen, and the ivory will warm. The rug is built to age rather than to hold a single moment, and it gathers character with each year on the floor.
What you are buying
Genuine antique Heriz carpets with rust grounds and comparable scale trade at international auction between twenty-five and sixty thousand dollars when condition is honest. This is a new weaving in the same village tradition, on the same loom geometry, in the same fibre at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property no other floor object holds.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale of a primary living area, set beneath the front edge of a sofa run with the rust ground reading as a warm anchor for walnut, leather, and oxidised brass. The blue medallion gathers the eye from across a room without dominating the wall art above it.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and water, never rub or use detergent. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. Under that regime the piece runs ninety to a hundred and ten years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
