An antique Heriz drawing reads as a piece of village architecture turned into textile. The medallion sits like a domed building seen from above, the corner pieces work as bastions, and the borders run as enclosure walls. This drawing has survived for over a century because it gives a room the same structural confidence that a strong piece of furniture does. The rug is composition before it is colour.
This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) antique-style Heriz was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers over roughly five and a half months. The hand-spun wool was washed with traditional plant-based agents to encourage the soft lustre that an antique carries, and the rust and blue dyes were matured for several weeks before the wool was lowered. The foundation is cotton, set tight at the warp and double-wefted across the body of the rug.
The composition
A deep rust ground holds a stepped indigo medallion with a creamy off-white interior. Corner spandrels in the same indigo create a quartered field. The drawing across the ground is a geometric reduction of palmette and vine, pared back to its skeleton. A subtle abrash band runs across the lower third of the field, the trace of one dye batch giving way to the next. The colour will warm over the next decade.
What you are buying
True antique Heriz carpets of this scale and condition trade in major auction houses in the $12,000 to $35,000 range. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, made to read with the same architectural authority, on a vertical loom in the same fibre. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and at this price the value against comparable dealer offerings in Europe and North America is plain.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a sitting room with a three-seat sofa and matching club chairs, or sits under a six-seater dining table without the chair pull spilling off the field. The rust ground holds white and limewashed walls warm and balances dark walnut joinery. Linen and cotton upholstery in soft cream or dusty blue lets the medallion stay in command of the room.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn twice a year to balance light exposure across the field. Vacuum weekly on suction only, with the beater bar fully disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth and resist the urge to rub. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Stored or moved properly, this piece is multi-generational property.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
