Rugsville Sicily Transitional All Over Coral Brown Handmade Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

A tufted rug is a wool drawing made flat. The cartoon is taped to the back of the canvas. The tufter works from the reverse side, trusting the design to come up clean on the front. When the canvas is cut from the frame, the face is sheared, washed, and finished by hand, then bonded with natural latex and a cotton scrim.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 8 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the brown field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.

The composition

A composition built around a brown ground that anchors the field with the warmth of walnut. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. Read at full room scale the rug becomes a quiet ground; read at arm's length it resolves into the weave, the pull of the pile, and the slight irregularity that signals a piece worked by hand.

The piece in a room

At 8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) the rug carries a working living room, a king bedroom, or a six-seat dining table. The brown field reads as a considered ground for upholstery and timber, not as the thing the room is about. Lighter walls push the colour forward as a focal field; deeper walls let it settle into the architecture as a quieter register. All four legs of a sectional can sit on top with breathing space around the perimeter, which is the canonical living-room placement at this scale. Sits well beside mid-century timber furniture, contemporary low-slung upholstery, and lighting that throws warm rather than cool light.

Care

Weekly suction vacuuming. The shedding settles within two months. Spot clean with a clean damp cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. Have the rug dry cleaned by a textile cleaner every couple of years to lift fine dust from the base of the pile.
