The hand-tufted carpet is a contemporary medium. The drawing is laid onto stretched canvas, tufted by hand with a wool-loaded gun, then sculpted with long shears at the end. The result reads as a single field rather than as a printed pattern, and the wool tier of the construction means the colour deepens with use rather than wearing back.

Built in India across seven to eight weeks. Three tufters fed wool through the canvas with the gun, the back was bonded with latex and finished with a cotton scrim, and the surface was sculpted with long shears in a final pass. The relief is what stops the pattern from dissolving into noise at viewing distance, and it is the difference between a tufted rug that reads as a designed object and one that reads as a printed surface.

The composition

The composition is built around a saturated rust and gold ground with the drawing brought up by a sculpted relief in the finishing pass. Yarn-dyed wool keeps the colour reading clean across the field; the relief keeps the pattern crisp at room scale; and the New Zealand staple gives the surface a faint sheen that catches the lamps in a evening room.

9' × 12' (274 × 366 cm) is the working scale for a drawing room around a full sectional or a ten-seat dining table. The rust and gold ground reads against soft bone, putty, or lime-washed plaster walls, and the geometry holds at viewing distance from a sofa or dining chair. Pairs with walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather. Direct sunlight on the rug deepens the colour relationships; the piece is built to be lived on, not protected.

Care

Run a suction-only vacuum across the rug each week; a beater bar will work fibre out of the latex backing over time. Blot spills immediately with a white cloth. Expect six to eight weeks of light shedding from the surface, after which the pile settles. A professional dry clean every two years keeps the colour clean.
