Mughal-era Agra weavings are noted in the historical record for three things. The fineness of the knotting, the elegance of the floral drawing, and the depth of the colour. Of those three, the floral drawing is the hardest to reproduce because it depends on a designer who understands how a tendril resolves at the corner of a medallion and how a vine breaks against a border. The pattern in this carpet was drawn in the same idiom by a designer trained in the Agra school, then transferred to the loom and tied by hand.

Two weavers shared the vertical loom in India for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million knots tied against a cotton warp, every one set by feel. The wool is hand-spun, longer-staple than mill yarn, which is why the floral work reads with depth rather than as flat colour. After the carpet was cut down from the loom it was washed three times in cold water and laid in the sun, the protocol that gives Agra carpets their soft sheen and their characteristic hand.

The composition

A warm tan ground carries floral and vine work in ivory, soft rose, and faded olive. The central medallion is drawn in the classical Agra register, with the corner pendants resolved into the field rather than walled off by border lines. Tan and ivory together create the contrast that lets the floral work read at any light level. The colour will deepen with age as the wool oxidises, and the ivory will warm into bone over the next decade.

What you are buying

Antique Agra carpets at this scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of $20,000 to $50,000 when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same tradition. Same loom, same fibre, same knot count, same finishing protocol. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is what separates a hand-knotted floor piece from anything else you place on a floor. A hand-knotted Agra is also one of the few categories of contemporary carpet that holds value at resale.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a formal living room with a three-seat sofa and two flanking armchairs floated above the carpet. It also sits comfortably under a six-seater dining table. The Agra palette reads naturally against limewashed cream walls, against stone, and against rosewood and teak furniture. Brass and copper metalwork carry the warmth of the wool through the rest of the room.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so traffic and light age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth. A professional wool wash by a trained conservator every five years lifts ground-in dust. With this care the carpet outlives its first room.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
