There is a quiet logic to the mughal agra tradition. The pattern carries information about the workshop, the year, the dye lot, the hand of the weaver, all encoded in irregularities a machine could never reproduce.
On this loom, 2 weavers shared the warp for 3 months. Roughly 691,200 hand-tied knots in New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, the pile cropped to 9 mm. The wool was vegetable-dyed in small batches using madder, indigo, walnut hull, and pomegranate rind, each bath matured for two to three weeks before the yarn was lowered.
The composition
Across the field, deep madder red and rust bleeds into adjacent tones with the soft variation that vegetable dye produces. The pattern rewards a long look. The same border element repeats with small irregularities of spacing that mark out the hand of the weaver from one foot of the loom to the next.
What you are buying
This is the entry point for serious hand-knotted work. The construction is the same as the higher-priced pieces in this catalogue. The economy comes from a slightly lower knot count and a more direct dye process, not from any compromise in the loom or the wool. A hand-knotted carpet of this kind is one of the few household objects that still gains value with use rather than losing it.
The piece in a room
4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom under the foot of a queen bed, for a study with a single armchair and a desk, or for the conversation area of a medium living room. The red reads warmer in lamplight and cooler in daylight.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every four to five years. With this care a hand-knotted piece of this construction runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
