The Agra workshops of Mughal India developed the floral medallion carpet as a sovereign idiom in the seventeenth century, weaving rugs for palace floors that combined Persian drawing with the softer Indian colour sense. The classical Agra is built around a single deep-red ground, an ivory medallion, and dense floral work that pulls the eye inward without ever crowding the field. The pattern in front of you descends directly from that workshop tradition.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five and a half months. Hand-spun wool was tied in the Persian asymmetric knot against a cotton foundation, building toward a knot count of around 2.6 million across the field. The dyes were prepared from madder root for the red, oak gall for the ivory wash, and walnut hull for the soft browns of the floral work. Each dye lot was matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.
The composition
A pendant-medallion in carved ivory floats over a saturated red ground crowded with palmette, leaf, and curling vine. The corners carry quarter-medallions that complete the geometry when the eye walks the rug. The border runs three layers deep in walnut, cream, and indigo, the way the original Mughal court rugs framed their fields. Over a decade the red will warm into garnet and the ivory will soften into bone.
What you are buying
Antique Indo-Persian Agras with 1880-1920 attribution and intact ground sell at Christie's, Bonhams, and Skinner in the range of $15,000 to $40,000 when condition is auction-grade. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the entire reason this category survived four centuries of replacement by cheaper alternatives.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale for an Agra. The rug expects to be the visual centre of a formal seating group, an eight-to-ten-seat dining table, or a primary library. Place it on dark walnut or oak floors, against ivory walls, with brass and lacquered wood furniture above. The red ground will absorb evening lamp light and return it as a warm depth across the room.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so wear and light age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cotton cloth, working inward from the spill edge. Plan a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator at year five and again at year ten. With this discipline the rug runs ninety years and beyond.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
