Agra rugs occupy a particular place in the Indian carpet vocabulary. The tradition came to its mature form under the Mughal court, where Persian weavers were brought to the imperial workshops and asked to combine the dense floral repeats of Tabriz with a colder palette and a slightly looser knot. Two to three weavers spent close to six months on this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) piece. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical beam, with the pattern transferred row by row from a hand-painted cartoon. The cotton foundation was double-warped to keep the field flat across the six-foot weft.
