Rugsville Agra Grey Taupe Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

Greys and taupes are the modern adaptation of the Agra vocabulary. The original palace work was built around saturation, but the workshops that supplied the Anglo-American trade at the turn of the twentieth century learned to draw the same floral tendrils in muted tonal palettes that suited European interiors. The carpet here is a contemporary expression of that softer tradition.

Three weavers worked the loom for roughly seven months. The Persian asymmetric knot was packed by hand against the vertical warp, row by row, with the beating comb tightening every line before the next was tied. Hand-spun wool was used for the pile, drawn from a single fleece batch so the grey holds an even tonal weight. Dye lots were prepared as small open vats; the slight irregularity in the depth of the taupe is a function of plant pigment behaving as it does, not a flaw in the run.

The composition

A grey field with taupe floral tracery, drawn at a finer scale than the typical Agra so the eye reads the pattern as texture before it reads as drawing. There is no central medallion. The field is treated as an even surface, with the border absorbing the visual weight that a medallion would otherwise carry. The colour balance is restrained; over the first few years the grey lightens slightly and the taupe deepens, sharpening the relief of the pattern.

Tonal Agras of this fineness, in clean condition, surface in the auction trade in the eighteen to thirty-five thousand dollar band. This is a current weaving on the same loom type, in the same fibre, at the same density. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the Indian carpet workshops that produced this piece are the same houses still supplying the Western dealer trade today.

At 9' × 12' (274 × 366 cm) the rug sits under a full dining set or a sectional sofa group. The grey palette suits cool plaster walls and pale oak floors; it pairs with brushed steel, blackened bronze, and brushed brass. Coloured upholstery should be muted rather than saturated; the rug holds the visual ground and works in service of furniture, not in competition with it.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so daylight reaches the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton. A specialist wool wash every five to seven years preserves the dye and the foundation. Properly cared for, the carpet runs into a second generation of use.
