Agra emerged as a centre of carpet design under the Mughal court, where weavers brought together Persian floral grammar with Indian colour sensibilities and produced a body of work whose drawing is denser than its Persian models and whose palette runs cooler. The Agra Black Beige draws on that lineage. A beige ground carries a Mughal floral repeat outlined in black, the high contrast giving the pattern an unusual graphic clarity at room scale.
Three weavers shared the upright loom in northern India for roughly six months. The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied row by row at a measured pace. Walnut hull and oak gall carried the deep black register, the beige is the natural undyed wool washed only enough to even the colour, and small quantities of madder and indigo deepen the floral centres. Each dye lot was matured in copper for several weeks before the wool was lowered.
The composition
A warm beige ground holds a Mughal floral repeat outlined in deep black, with small accents in muted madder and indigo at the centres of the larger blossoms. The border layers a wider black band between two thinner guards, framing the field with the gravity of a charcoal mat around an etching. The black has been built up through successive walnut and oak gall baths rather than through synthetic dye, which gives it a slight warmth in daylight that a single bath black cannot match. The contrast deepens with use rather than fading.
What you are buying
An Agra pattern carpet of this density at drawing room scale, sold through Western dealers or at auction, sits between four and ten lakh equivalent. This new weaving carries the same fibre, density, and dye lineage at workshop pricing. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object in the household budget that holds that property over a generation of use.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing room scale, sized for a long sectional sofa or a dining arrangement seating ten to twelve. The high contrast beige and black palette suits chalk walls and reads well against deeper plaster equally. Black lacquer, brass, and walnut joinery all sit comfortably above the field. The graphic clarity of the pattern means it pairs well with modern art and clean lined upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each season so window light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from outside the stain toward the centre. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. The piece is built for several generations of use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
