A black-ground floral in the Ziegler tradition is a piece of dramatic restraint. The dark field eliminates the visual chatter that surrounds a typical floral and pushes the drawing forward as if it were inlaid. Late nineteenth-century buyers ordered black-ground Zieglers for the dining room and the library, the rooms used after dark, where the drawing reads under candlelight or low lamp better than any pale-ground equivalent.
Hand-knotted in India over roughly five months by three weavers sharing a vertical loom. The pile is hand-spun wool, double-plied so the cut shows even on a black ground where unevenness would show first. The black was built from indigo overdyed with iron-mordanted walnut, the route to a true neutral black in a vegetable system; chemical black goes muddy or greys out under household light, vegetable black holds its register.
The composition
A jet black field carries a softly drawn floral in faded ochre, ivory, and a thread of muted rose. The drawing is restrained on purpose, since with a black ground around it anything more elaborate competes with the field rather than reading on it. The border is a single ivory guard band, narrow, drawn to frame the field rather than crown it. Over a decade the black will lighten by perhaps fifteen percent toward a deep charcoal, and the ivory will warm into bone.
What you are buying
Period black-ground Ziegler carpets are scarce because the dark field shows wear faster than pale grounds, so very few survived the heavy use of the early twentieth century in good condition. Auction comparables clear fifty thousand US dollars when they appear. This is a new weaving in equivalent fibre and dye preparation. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, as any hand-knotted wool piece in stable fibre does.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or a formal dining footprint under a six-to-eight seater. The black ground sits beautifully against pale plaster, putty, and natural lime walls; it reads dramatically against pale wood floors and softens against walnut. The carpet supplies the graphic event in the composition.
Conservation
Rotate end for end every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; never use a beater bar on a black ground because it lifts loose fibre and shows lighter beneath. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years. With that schedule the carpet runs decades and gains the slight luminosity old wool develops at the surface.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
