Chobi is the Dari word for wood, and Chobi carpets take their name from the dye palette built around walnut, oak, and other woody plant sources. The pattern vocabulary descends from the great workshops of nineteenth century Persia and Afghanistan, softened over generations into open grounds, generous floral vines, and the warm neutral palette that the woody dyes produce. The Afghan Chobi carries that lineage at drawing room scale.

Three weavers shared the loom in northern India for around six months. The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun ghazni style wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied against the vertical beam at a measured cadence. The dye programme uses walnut hull for the browns, madder root for the warmer rust accents, oak gall for deeper reserves, and a small quantity of indigo to balance the warm register. The finished carpet is then washed in the workshop tradition that gives Chobi its characteristic mellowed surface.

The composition

An ivory ground carries a continuous floral vine in walnut brown, soft rust, and a touch of indigo. The drawing is generous, the spacing measured, and the border restrained to a single layered band rather than the multiple guards of denser Persian patterns. The wash gives the surface a slight muted quality that mimics the patina of an antique without forcing it. Over a decade of use the ivory will warm into bone and the rust will soften into terracotta, with the carpet reading more unified each year.

What you are buying

A Chobi pattern wool carpet of this density at 9' x 12' scale, sold through Western dealers or at international auction, sits between four and nine lakh equivalent. This new weaving uses the same fibre, same dye lineage, same density, at workshop pricing. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the defining property of serious hand knotted wool and the reason these pieces survive across generations.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a drawing room arranged around a sectional sofa and a low table, or a dining setting seating ten to twelve as the focal arrangement. The mellow Chobi palette suits chalk, putty, and warm plaster walls, with oak and walnut joinery reading particularly well above it. A linen sofa in undyed cream and a brass coffee table sit comfortably above the field without competing.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each season so window light and footfall distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge of the stain toward the centre. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. The piece is built to outlive its first owners and several arrangements of furniture above it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
