The Afghan Chobi is a contemporary reading of the older Ziegler vocabulary, with the same open palmette field but a tighter rendering and a more disciplined palette drawn from the natural earths of central Asia. The name attaches to the dye process rather than to a place. Chobi means wood, the reference being to the long mineral wash that mellows the wool toward the patina of an antique. This rug carries the lineage with a measured all-over field that reads as already lived with.

Four weavers worked the vertical loom for around six months. The pile is hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool laid on a cotton foundation and tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The dye baths were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, oak gall, and pomegranate rind, each one matured in copper vessels over two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. After clipping, the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash that pulled the saturation back into antique register.

The composition

An open ground worked over with palmette, vine, and rosette in a continuous all-over reading. The dominant values are warm madder rust and a deep indigo that reads charcoal in shadow, set against a pomegranate-washed cream ground. Faint horizontal abrash bands cross the field where neighbouring dye lots sit side by side, the natural fingerprint of plant-dye work. The colour will mature for ten years before it settles, and then it holds for a century.

What you are buying

Antique Persian carpets in this lineage and scale carry estimates of forty to ninety thousand US dollars at international auction. This piece is woven on the same vertical loom, in the same Persian knot, in long-staple hand-spun wool, with the same plant-dye discipline. At one and a half lac it is priced against domestic furniture rather than against the auction comparable, and unlike furniture it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. The all-over field welcomes asymmetric furniture placement; the rug calibrates to the room rather than asking the room to centre on it. The palette pairs with walnut, brass, raw linen, terracotta plaster, and a single large work above the sofa.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece runs ninety years in regular use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
