Chobi means new wood in Persian, and the name describes the muted plant-dye palette this carpet works in. Soft greens, sand, ivory, and the occasional faded rust, all struck from natural sources rather than synthetic pigments. The Chobi tradition was developed in Afghan refugee weaving communities in the 1980s, drawing on older Persian and Turkmen vocabularies but pushed toward a softer, sun-bleached register. The pattern in this carpet sits inside that lineage and is woven in India to the same standard.

Two weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. Roughly 2.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand against a cotton warp. The wool is hand-spun Ghazni stock, prized for its long staple and its ability to take vegetable dye to depth. The dyes were prepared from indigo, walnut hull, madder root, and pomegranate rind, each bath matured in copper before the wool was lowered. After cutting, the carpet was washed three times in cold water and laid in the sun for the dye to fix and the wool to lift its natural sheen.

The composition

A pale ivory and faded sand ground carries the all-over floral repeat in muted indigo, soft sage, and faded rose. There is no central medallion. The pattern runs corner to corner in the older Chobi convention, which lets the carpet work under furniture without losing its centre. The border holds a single vine band against a slightly deeper guard. The colour shifts with the seasons because vegetable dye responds to humidity and light. Over a decade the ivory will warm into bone, the sage will deepen, and the rose will fade further toward antique pink.

What you are buying

Antique Chobi-tradition carpets at this scale and condition trade at Western auction in the range of $10,000 to $30,000 when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre and dye. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Vegetable-dyed Chobi carpets in particular gain value as the dye matures, which is the opposite of the depreciation curve of every machine-made or synthetic-dyed alternative.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a sofa and two armchairs in a primary living room with the carpet visible at the edges, or sits under a six-seat dining table. The Chobi palette is the most architecturally adaptable in the Persian repertoire because the muted vegetable dye does not fight any wall colour. It works equally well in a contemporary minimalist room and in a traditional one. Direct sunlight is welcome rather than feared.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so light and footfall age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Address spills immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth. A professional wool wash every five years preserves the vegetable dye depth. With this care the carpet outlives its first owner and gains value across a generation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
