Ivory and brown is the quietest pairing in the European decorative carpet repertoire and also the hardest to draw well. With no contrast to fall back on, every line in the cartouche has to be confidently placed and every shift in tone has to be earned. The Aubusson workshops of central France perfected the language in the eighteenth century, and that drawing tradition is what this rug inherits.
The piece was hand-knotted in India over roughly six months by three weavers sharing a vertical loom. Hand-spun wool tied row by row against the beam in the Persian asymmetric knot over a cotton warp and weft. The dyes were prepared in small batches from walnut hull, oak gall, pomegranate skin, and a touch of madder, matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks before the wool was dipped. Walnut and oak gall produce the warm browns that age true rather than greying.
The composition
A soft ivory ground holds a central cartouche and corner pendants in walnut brown, with garland work and acanthus running between in close shades of tobacco and cream. Tone-on-tone composition reads quietly across the room and unfolds on close approach. The ivory will warm into bone over the next decade. The browns will deepen and acquire a faint russet undertone.
What you are buying
Period Aubusson carpets of comparable size and palette move through European auctions at $25,000 to $55,000 when they appear in clean condition. The construction in front of you matches that lineage, knot for knot, in the same fibre and the same dye method, redrawn for a contemporary room. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; few floor objects share that property.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits well in a primary living room with cream upholstery and pale wood, in a primary bedroom under a king bed with the field showing on three sides, or under a six to eight seat dining table. The ivory ground absorbs surrounding tone, so it pairs equally well with cool stone walls and with warm plaster paint. Brass, walnut, and bleached oak all hold the palette together.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working inward, and never rub. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years to keep the cotton foundation supple. With this discipline, the rug runs eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
