The Aubusson tradition began in central France in the seventeenth century as a flatweave answer to the heavy pile carpets of Persia and Turkey. Lighter, lower, and graphically clearer, the Aubusson palette settled into rococo cartouches, garlands, and scrolling acanthus by the eighteenth century, then carried that vocabulary into the salons of European nobility for two hundred years. The piece in front of you draws on that vocabulary in a knotted construction, redrawn for a contemporary room.
The rug was hand-knotted in India over roughly six months by three weavers on a vertical loom. Hand-spun wool tied row by row in the Persian asymmetric knot over a cotton warp and weft. The dyestuffs were prepared from indigo, walnut hull, weld, and pomegranate skin in copper vats, matured for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The black was over-dyed in two baths to give it the depth that flat single-dip dye cannot reach.
The composition
A near-black ground carries a central cartouche in old gold, with garland work and acanthus scrolls flowing corner to corner. The drawing is rococo in lineage but pulled toward a calmer geometry that suits a modern room. Black and gold is the most demanding pairing in the European decorative repertoire because it amplifies any imprecision in the drawing; this composition holds because the cartouche is set off-axis enough to feel hand-drawn rather than gridded.
What you are buying
Period Aubusson carpets of comparable scale and condition appear in European salerooms at $25,000 to $60,000 when they surface in clean shape. This is a new piece in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, in the Persian asymmetric knot, with vegetable-dyed colour. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property that defines the difference between a furnishing and a long-lived asset.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a formal living room, a library, or a dining space under an eight-seat table with the field showing at the edges. The black and gold palette wants warm wood floors, walnut or oak rather than pale ash, and walls in cream or oat plaster rather than cool grey. Pairs naturally with brass, leather, and dark velvet upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and daylight age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside inward. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five years. Cared for in this way, the rug runs eighty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
