Heriz weaving in north-west Iran built its reputation on a single bold idea, that a carpet could organise a room around one large geometric medallion and a few angular spandrels rather than around a fog of small floral repeats. Village looms in the Azerbaijan highlands turned out these robust pieces for nineteenth-century Tabriz dealers who in turn shipped them to American homes by the trainload. The Heriz in front of you, woven in rust on an ivory ground, sits inside that long line.

Two to three weavers in India spent close to four months on the loom. The drawing is squared off, never curvilinear, because Heriz cartoons are read knot by knot from a graph rather than from a flowing master pattern. New Zealand wool takes the rust, terracotta, and deep indigo at saturations village dyers would recognise.

The composition

A large stepped medallion in rust anchors the centre, framed by ivory corner pieces and a deep indigo guard band. The geometry is angular, almost architectural, the kind of drawing that holds at a distance and only reveals its small irregularities on approach. Heriz red softens with use rather than fading flat, settling toward the colour of fired terracotta after a decade of light.

What you are buying

Antique village Heriz carpets of the 1900-1930 generation in honest condition trade at international auction in the range of fifteen to thirty-five thousand US dollars. This is a current weaving in the same tribal idiom, on the same upright loom, in the same fibre. The rug acquires patina rather than wearing out, which is the inverse of almost any other floor surface you can buy.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a primary seating arrangement or a four-seat dining table. The rust palette holds confidently against cream walls, lime-washed plaster, and pale linen upholstery. Walnut and oak floors both read well underneath. Avoid placing it against red-toned brick or strong magenta upholstery, where the geometry loses contrast.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly without the beater bar. Rotate the rug end-to-end twice a year so the field ages evenly. Blot spills with cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should wash the rug every five to seven years to lift compacted dust from the foundation. The carpet expects to run eighty years on these terms.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
