Rugsville Norwich Persian Light Green Ivory Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

Soft-Persian weaving in the Norwich character was developed for collectors who wanted the architecture of a classical medallion carpet without the saturation of the original Tabriz pieces. By the 1880s, English buyers were asking workshops for cooler grounds, paler centres, and quieter borders. The pattern carried by this rug belongs to that softening tradition. A light green field with an ivory medallion floating in it, the corner work drawn so it never closes the composition.

Three weavers shared the loom for close to five and a half months. Roughly 2.5 million asymmetric knots were tied by hand against the cotton warp, each pass packed down with a metal comb. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in the skein before warp setting, then luster washed at the finishing stage to relax the colour and bring the lanolin back. The ivory is undyed natural wool. The green carries a faint warm undertone where the dye took a second bath, which is why the surface reads as breathing rather than as printed.

The composition

A wide field in pale green with the ivory medallion rising centrally, vine work running corner to corner in tones close to the field rather than against it. The border is held narrow, a single guard band rather than the layered borders that turn a softer Persian busy. The dye will continue to settle for the first two years of use. The green will move slightly toward straw, the ivory will warm toward bone, and the rug will reach the colour it was always meant to hold around year three or four.

What you are buying

Antique soft-Persian carpets at 8' x 10' with this character and clean condition fetch four to six lakh through Sotheby's and Bonhams when they surface, and substantially more through specialist Western dealers. This is a contemporary weaving in the same lineage, hand-knotted in the same fibre on the same loom type. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The only other thing on a floor with that property is solid stone.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room laid out around a sofa and a pair of armchairs, or a dining table with seating for six. The pale green and ivory palette holds against lime wash, against pale plaster, and against wood-panelled walls. It pairs with linen, walnut, brass, and unframed paper or canvas art. Direct sun is fine for short periods and will help the colour breathe.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs into its ninth decade and outlives its first owner.
