The boteh is one of the oldest motifs in the rug-weaving tradition. It survived because it kept giving back to whoever stood above it, century after century, room after room. This piece carries the motif in a quiet contemporary register without losing the gravity of the original. The composition holds together at any viewing distance, from the doorway to the seated reader.
A single weaver worked this piece for six to ten weeks in India. The pile is hand-spun wool. The foundation is cotton warp and weft. Every knot tied by feel against the warp, then beaten down with a steel comb before the next row went in. The making is slow because the result is meant to last several lifetimes.
The composition
Navy sits across an open ground, the secondary motifs scaled small enough that the field stays the principal subject. The border is restrained. The colour is layered, two or three values close together rather than a single flat tone, so the surface holds depth at every viewing distance. The wool catches the light differently from the morning to the evening, and the rug looks slightly different at every passing.
What you are buying
The making of a hand-knotted carpet has not changed in any meaningful way for centuries. What changes is who is willing to spend the time. This piece sits below the price of a comparable Western dealer commission while carrying the same construction, the same fibre, and the same knot count. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
2'6" x 8' (76 × 244 cm) is the accent scale: under a coffee table, in a foyer, at the foot of a bed. Use it where the floor needs a single considered note rather than a full carpeted ground. Reads strongly against pale walls and tempers under a dark ceiling. The navy register pairs with brushed brass, oxidised steel, and the warmer end of contemporary timber finishes without forcing a single design vocabulary on the room.
Conservation
Turn the rug end to end each spring and autumn so the wool ages evenly to light and footfall. Vacuum on suction only, no rotating brush. Blot spills with cotton, never scrub. Send the carpet to a wool-trained hand washer every five years. The rug is built to outlive its first owners with this regimen, and the dye work deepens rather than fades over the working decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
