Rugsville Ziegler Beige Runner Wool Carpet 3.6x20

Four feet wide and twenty feet long is an unusual format. Wider than a runner, narrower than a room rug, it is the scale of a long sitting bench, a bay-window seating area, or the strip of floor between a wall of bookshelves and a ranged set of armchairs. The format originated in the long galleries and salons of nineteenth-century homes, where neither a true runner nor a true rectangle suited the architecture, and it has survived because no other format covers the same kind of long narrow ground.

This 4' x 20' (122 x 610 cm) Ziegler-tradition rug was hand-knotted in India by two weavers working side by side across roughly six and a half months. The wider format means the loom has to be drawn taller and stronger to support the additional weft tension, and the two weavers have to coordinate their knot rhythm so the field stays consistent across the width. The wool is hand-spun and the foundation is cotton, double-wefted along the full length.

The composition

A warm beige ground holds the classic Ziegler open palmette and vine repeat in faded indigo and soft rust. The drawing is half-drop and the wider format gives the pattern the breathing room it was originally designed for. The border is a single restrained guard band that follows the rectangle without overpowering it. Slight abrash variations across the field give the length its natural punctuation and tell the eye that this is hand-dyed wool rather than printed pattern.

Long narrow rugs in this format and fibre trade in international auction rooms in the $9,000 to $22,000 band when comparable examples surface. The combination of width, length, vegetable dye, and hand-spun wool is unusual outside of the antique market. A piece of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the value against equivalent dealer pricing in Europe is unusually open.

Conservation

Rotate end-for-end annually so wear from foot traffic distributes evenly along the length. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with clean cotton and resist rubbing the pile. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug will outlast its first owner.
