Rugsville Ziegler Beige Wool Carpet 6' x 9'

The original Ziegler commission of the 1880s set out to solve a particular commercial problem, that classical Persian carpets were too saturated and too busy for the cooler English drawing rooms they were beginning to furnish. The Manchester firm asked weavers to enlarge the scale of the palmette work, drop two or three of the brightest colours from the dye lot, and let the field breathe. The Ziegler Beige in front of you continues that brief.

Around four months at the loom for two to three weavers in India, working from an enlarged Ziegler-style cartoon. New Zealand wool sits at the heart of the rug because it accepts soft, low-saturation colour without going dull, which is the failure mode of cheaper fibres in this kind of palette. The pile was clipped low after weaving so the drawing reads as graphic rather than as plush.

The composition

A field of soft beige carries large-scale palmette work in close walnut and warm taupe values. The border is restrained, a single layered guard rather than the three or four bands of a classical Persian carpet, which is the Ziegler signature. The wool will warm toward bone with light and the brown will hold a steady walnut. The piece reads as architecture rather than as ornament.

This is a contemporary weaving on the same upright loom, in the same fibre, to the same compositional discipline. 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the seating-area scale for a primary lounge or a six-seat dining setting. The neutral palette holds against limewash walls, oak floors, walnut furniture, and oxidised brass. Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the carpet end-to-end at every change of season. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years to keep the foundation clean. The carpet expects a service life of eighty years on this regimen.
