Brown is one of the harder grounds to weave correctly. The colour can flatten into a single tonal note, can pull olive under the wrong light, can read as muddy when the dye is taken from a single bath. The brown in this runner is built from walnut hull and a touch of indigo to cut the warmth, layered across two dye baths so the field carries depth at distance and complexity on approach. It is a brown the trade calls a working brown, the kind that gets quieter and richer over years rather than dulling.
This 2'6" x 20' (76 x 610 cm) runner was hand-knotted in India by a single weaver across roughly six months. The Ziegler-derived palmette and vine repeat translates well into a brown ground because the drawing reads even when the colour is restrained. The wool is hand-spun and the foundation is cotton, double-wefted across the full length of the runner. Knots were tied row by row against a vertical beam and packed down with a steel comb.
The composition
A deep walnut brown ground holds an open palmette and vine repeat in faded ivory, soft rust, and aged gold. The drawing is half-drop and the eye finds the rhythm of the repeat within the first two metres. The border is a single restrained band, narrow enough not to compete with the length of the field. The brown carries a slight green shift in daylight and pulls warmer under tungsten light, the way a good walnut floorboard does.
What you are buying
Twenty-foot runners in vegetable-dyed wool with a brown Ziegler-tradition ground sell in international dealer rooms in the $8,000 to $18,000 band, when they can be sourced at all. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, in the same hand-spun fibre, by a single experienced weaver across half a year of continuous work. A runner like this appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
2'6" x 20' (76 x 610 cm) is the working length for a heritage hall, a long galleried corridor, or the run between public rooms in a large flat. The deep brown grounds white walls and pulls limewashed plaster into a warmer register. Brass, walnut, and aged leather sit comfortably above the field. The runner is at home above stone, terracotta, and stained oak floors.
Conservation
Rotate end-for-end once a year so the wear from foot traffic settles evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth and avoid rubbing the pile. Plan a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the runner runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
