The Ziegler design did not come out of a village or a tribe. It came out of a commercial decision in 1883, when Ziegler and Co., a German firm trading out of Manchester, sent designers to western Persia to soften the dense classical floral repeats into something the Anglo-American drawing room could absorb. The pattern in front of you carries that lineage forward. Open field, restrained palmettes, vinework that breathes rather than crowds.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, with each row tied row by row against a vertical beam by feel and memory rather than from a chart at the weaver's eye. The dyestuffs were prepared in small batches from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and pomegranate skin, matured in copper vats over two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.
The composition
A soft beige ground with the slightest warm cast, scrolling vinework in muted indigo and old gold, and palmettes that read as silhouettes rather than as sharp graphic forms. The colour is built up through the slow saturation of vegetable dye, not surface print, so the field carries an abrash that shifts gently in raking light. The beige will warm into honey over the next decade. The indigos will deepen.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler carpets in this scale and condition appear at Christie's and Rippon Boswell auctions in the range of $20,000 to $45,000 when they surface. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, knot for knot. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few objects you place on a floor share that quality.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room or a six to eight seat dining table. The beige ground absorbs surrounding tone rather than fighting it, so it sits comfortably with linen upholstery, brushed brass, walnut casework, and ivory plaster walls. The vinework reads at a distance and rewards close inspection.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge inward. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years keeps the foundation supple. Looked after this way, a Ziegler of this construction runs eighty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
