Heritage in carpet language refers to the slow craft tradition that preserves the materials, dye process, and loom geometry of the early village workshops without modernising any step that would speed the work. The Sultanabad heritage drawing carried in this rug is built on that principle. Madder root, fermented indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull provide the entire palette, the loom is vertical and shared by hand, and the wool is washed and combed before spinning rather than processed at scale.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. Around 1.7 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a vertical beam, with the dye baths matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the skein was lowered. The wool itself is long-staple New Zealand fleece, chosen because the staple lifts plant dye to the saturation the heritage palette requires while keeping the small variation that reads as patina ten years on.

The composition

An open soft brown ground carries an all-over vine in beige and faded madder, with the pattern thickening toward an implied medallion rather than resolving into a hard form. The corner work is restrained, and a single deep guard band closes the border without crowding the field. The colour will keep moving for a decade. The brown lightens, the beige warms into bone, and the madder mellows into terracotta. The rug is built to age rather than to hold a single moment of arrival.

What you are buying

Heritage Sultanabad carpets in this scale and dye discipline trade at international auction between twenty-five and fifty thousand dollars when honest examples surface. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, on the same loom geometry at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is true of no other object you set on the floor of a room.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits naturally beneath the front feet of a sectional or under a six-to-eight seater dining table. The brown and beige palette pairs with walnut and oak floors, with cream and mid-tone walls, and with leather and linen upholstery in equal measure. The piece reads as a quiet architectural ground at a distance and rewards close inspection on approach.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction alone and the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and cool water. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. The piece runs ninety years on a domestic floor with that care.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
